How to Protect Truck Accessories from UV Damage

UV exposure is the slowest form of damage your truck accessories face — and the most preventable. Sun fades vinyl, chalks powder coat, and makes plastics brittle. Two things determine how your gear ages: what it's made of, and ten minutes of seasonal care.

Buy UV-stable materials first

Protection starts at purchase. Aluminum panels with quality powder coat — like TruckTon hard flip-back covers and running boards — hold their finish for years, where cheap vinyl and bare plastics fade visibly in a season or two. The 10-minute seasonal routine

• Wash with car soap — dirt holds heat and accelerates fading
• Dress rubber seals on tonneau covers with a silicone-based protectant twice a year; it blocks UV and prevents drying and cracking
• Skip harsh degreasers on powder coat — they strip the finish that's doing the UV protection
• Wax painted/coated surfaces once a season for an extra UV barrier

Vinyl soft covers need the most attention

If you run a soft cover, use a vinyl-specific UV protectant (not a glossy tire shine — the solvents harm stitching) every couple of months in summer. Or step up to an aluminum hard cover and stop thinking about it.

Parking matters more than products

A truck parked nose-south in an open lot takes maximum UV on the same surfaces every day. Shade, a garage, or even rotating parking direction spreads the exposure.
