How to Clean a Tonneau Cover the Right Way

A tonneau cover needs about fifteen minutes of cleaning a few times a year — but the wrong products can dull the finish or dry out the seals. Here's the right way for both hard and soft covers.

Cleaning a hard (aluminum) cover

1. Rinse first. Flush grit off before anything touches the surface — rubbing dry dust scratches the finish.
2. Wash with car soap and a soft mitt or brush. Ordinary automotive shampoo is all a powder-coated panel needs.
3. Rinse the rails and drains. Open the cover and flush the side rails — trapped grit there wears the seals.
4. Dry and inspect the perimeter seal while you're at it.

Cleaning a soft (vinyl) cover

Same process, but use a vinyl-safe cleaner and finish with a vinyl UV protectant. Avoid stiff brushes that scuff the weave and anything solvent-based near stitching.

What to avoid on any cover

• Degreasers and all-purpose household cleaners — they strip protective finishes and dry rubber seals
• Pressure washers up close — they can force water past any seal; keep the nozzle a metre back
• Abrasive pads — matte finishes polish shiny where you scrub
• Glossy tire-shine products on seals — the solvents swell and crack rubber over time

The step most owners skip: seal care
