If you've ever tried to order a tonneau cover or bed mat online, you've hit the question that stops most Silverado owners cold: what bed size do I actually have? Understanding Chevy Silverado bed sizes matters because a cover built for a 5'8" short box will not seal on a 6'6" standard box — and "close enough" means leaks, rattles and a return shipment. This guide explains every Chevy Silverado bed size by generation, in both feet-and-inches and metric, so you can order the right accessory the first time.
The good news: Chevrolet has kept things fairly consistent for two decades. Once you know your model year and cab style, your bed length is usually easy to pin down — and worth confirming with a tape measure, which takes about two minutes.
The Short Answer: Three Bed Lengths
The Silverado 1500 has been offered in three bed lengths for every recent generation:
- Short box — "5'8" bed": roughly 69.9 inches (about 1.78 m) on 2019–2026 trucks. The most common bed on Crew Cab trucks in Canada.
- Standard box — "6'6" bed": roughly 79.4 inches (about 2.02 m). Standard on Double Cab, optional on Crew Cab.
- Long box — "8' bed": roughly 98.2 inches (about 2.49 m) on current trucks. Mostly found on Regular Cab work trucks.
Notice that none of these match their nicknames exactly. A "5'8" bed" is not 68.0 inches — it's closer to 70. That's normal, and it's why accessory listings (including ours) use the nominal sizes rather than exact measurements.
Silverado 1500 Bed Sizes by Generation
2019–2026 (current generation): short box about 69.9", standard box about 79.4", long box about 98.2". This generation also widened the bed, so covers and mats for 2019+ trucks are not interchangeable with earlier years even when the length matches.
2014–2018: short box about 69.3", standard box about 78.9", long box about 97.8". Nominally the same 5'8" / 6'6" / 8' lineup, but with different rail dimensions than the current trucks.
2007–2013: very similar to 2014–2018 — 5'8", 6'6" and 8' nominal lengths with slightly different bed rails and stake pocket locations.

Silverado HD (2500/3500) Bed Sizes
Heavy-duty Silverados skip the short box entirely. Current 2500HD and 3500HD trucks come with either a standard box of about 6'9" (82.2") or a long box of about 8'2" (98.3"). If you own an HD truck, don't order 1500 accessories — the beds are different sizes and shapes. How to Measure Your Bed (Two Minutes, One Tape)
Even with the charts above, measure before you order — especially on a used truck, where a previous owner's paperwork may not match what's actually in the driveway.
Drop the tailgate, then run a tape measure inside the bed from the bulkhead (the wall behind the cab) to the inside edge of the closed tailgate position. Measure along the bed floor, not over the rails. Round to the nearest nominal size: about 70" is a 5'8" box, about 79" is a 6'6" box, about 82" on an HD is a 6'9" box, and anything near 98" is a long box. Which Cab Usually Comes With Which Bed
If the truck isn't in front of you — say you're shopping listings — cab style is a strong clue:
- Crew Cab: usually the 5'8" short box; the 6'6" standard box is available but less common in Canada.
- Double Cab: almost always the 6'6" standard box.
- Regular Cab: typically the 8' long box on work trucks, sometimes the 6'6".
Treat these as defaults, not guarantees — Chevrolet has offered odd combinations over the years, and fleet orders especially can surprise you. Measure to confirm.
Why Bed Size Matters for a Tonneau Cover
A tonneau cover seals against the bed rails along its full length. Order one size too long and it physically won't mount; one size too short and you're left with an open gap at the tailgate that funnels in rain and road salt — a real problem through a Canadian winter.
